WOMEN'S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: COMMENTS FROM YURY MALEEU.

23.08.2021

Yury, in the match against Swansea our girls won their first victory in the Women's Champions League. What are your emotions both from the game and from the tournament as a whole?

- Emotions are twofold. The victory was certainly pleasant and the opponent was rather tough, with the British, if I may say so, style. The victory was rather confident, with moments and a good game, there can be no questions here. And twofold because it all ended too quickly for us. Naturally, we were counting on something else.

What went wrong in the first match?

- The team was equal, I am absolutely sure of that. It is still difficult to answer. In my opinion, there is a complex of reasons that we will try to analyze.

How did you reset the girls after the match against Apollon? How in general  did you tune the team, considering the preparation in difficult conditions, both the difficult flight and climatic conditions.

- The girls themselves understood everything perfectly. You know, in the first match there was a feeling that it was not our team that just entered the football field. I still have doubts, because I don’t know the exact reasons. Our football players are great, they know how to tune in. We watched a couple of moments with CSKA, explained something, and then the team itself managed to tune in. Many of the girls play for the national team, have played against the Wales team, and have faced British teams, so from the point of view of psychology they understood that they had to go out and win.

If you try to put the first game outside the brackets, are you satisfied with the actions of the girls in the second match?

- No, unfortunately, I won't be able to discount the first match, because it was really very important. We have been preparing for it for so long and played not very good. But in general, the Champions League is the Champions League and you can feel it from the very first minutes. The best representatives of their countries are gathered here and this already says a lot.

This year, the Champions League has a renewed format, which has already brought some surprises in the group stage. How do you like it in practice?

- You know, this format of the knockout tournament makes you to prepare the most for the very first match. Previously, the teams had chances, maybe from the second place to pass, but here there is no second attempt, either you win and go further, or you play exclusively for the rating.

How much better is such a system?

- I can't judge here, if UEFA has defined such a format, it means that it is suitable for them both in terms of efficiency and finances.

The Women's Champions League was, perhaps, the main goal of "Dinamo-BSUPC" for this season. How will you end this year now?

- Life does not end. We must draw the right conclusions and make sure not to repeat the mistakes that let us down in this debut season of European competition. We were not 100% ready, unfortunately, and that affected. Now we continue to prepare for the rest of the championship, plus we have the mathces of the national teams. The national women's team of Belarus is expected to play with Cyprus in September, so we will repay the debt.
